Flukey is one of the more intriguing arms in this year’s class. Across 55 innings last spring, the 6-foot-6 righthander collected 83 strikeouts. Flukey has an ultra-long arm stroke and relies primarily on his mid-90s fastball that has been up to 98 mph with big-time carry through the zone, and a mid-to-upper-80s gyro slider that has been effective in generating whiffs. -

Flukey showed promise last summer with his lanky, projectable 6-foot-6 frame and a fastball that he ran up to 93 mph. At the beginning of the season in April, Flukey dialed his fastball up to 97 mph, sparking more interest throughout the area and drawing more national-level scouts in for his starts. What he has shown since then has been more up-and down-performance with fluctuating velocity and strike-throwing. Since hitting 97 early, Flukey has mostly operated at 90-93 mph and touched 95, with some starts where his velocity has dipped into the upper 80s by the third or fourth inning. His fastball has late life and traits that help it play up to get empty swings. Flukey’s slider has its moments but is usually a fringe-average pitch at best, with a splitter that’s below-average. His longer arm stroke causes him to work around his breaking ball and, like a lot of gangly teenagers, he is still learning to sync up his mechanics to throw consistent strikes, something he did well early in the spring but wasn’t as sharp in later outings. Some scouts think Flukey’s future could be in a bullpen, but he offers a big frame, a lively fastball and should be able to hold his velocity better—and perhaps add more—as he packs on more weight.
