Owens is a lefthanded-hitting shortstop who oozes projectability with a body and athleticism to dream on. Listed at 6-foot-3, 185 pounds, Owens has coat-hanger shoulders and the look of someone who should be able to add plenty of good strength and mass in the coming years. He’s a multi-sport athlete who also plays football at Providence Academy in Johnson City, Tenn., and his father, Jeremy, was an eighth-round pick in 1998 who played 10 seasons in the minors. Owens lacks a carrying tool now, but he has a solid blend of average tools across the board, and each could make jumps with added strength gains. While Owens lacks an extensive hitting track record on the travel circuit, he does have solid bat-to-ball skills and a clean, functional lefthanded swing that can get a bit long at times. He should grow into plus raw power and does a nice job backspinning the ball to the opposite field. At the 2025 draft combine he managed exit velocities up to 108 mph. Owens is a shortstop now but has some work to do with his actions and exchange to stick at the position. He could be a better fit at third base where his strong arm—he’s been up to 94 mph on the mound—would play well, but he also runs well enough to handle the outfield. Owens is committed to Georgia Southern and earns some Evan Carter comparisons thanks to his Tennessee roots, lefthanded hitting status and athleticism.
