The Red Sox are calling up MLB’s top prospect Roman Anthony ahead of Monday night’s game against the Rays. The news was first reported by MassLive’s Christopher Smith and confirmed by Anthony himself as he departed Triple-A Worcester’s park Monday afternoon.

Anthony, 21, hit .288/.423/.491 with 10 homers–including a 497-foot grand slam earlier this week–in Triple-A.

Anthony has flashed exciting skills since the Red Sox drafted him in the supplemental second round in 2022. Despite hitting just .228/.376/.316 over his first 42 games with Low-A Salem, Anthony earned a promotion to High-A Greenville on the strength of his underlying data. The Red Sox saw was a young hitter with a strong blend of bat-to-ball skills, advanced approach and top-of-the-scale power.

Once with Greenville, Anthony took off. He hit .294/.412/.569 with 12 home runs over his next 54 games and confirmed Boston’s belief in his ability and what it saw in the data early. He received a late-season promotion to Double-A and ranked among baseball’s Top 50 prospects in the offseason.

Anthony’s prospect stock reached another stratosphere in 2024. He began the season with Double-A Portland hitting .269/.367/.489 over 84 games. That summer, he was named the top prospect in baseball when he ascended to No. 1 in Baseball America’ midseason Top 100 Prospects list.

The Red Sox again promoted Anthony late in 2024 to Triple-A. He hit .344/.463/.519 over the final 35 games with Worcester, ranking as the top positional prospect in the game over the offseason.

Despite clamoring for Anthony to break camp with the Red Sox this year, the team assigned him to Triple-A Worcester. There he hit .288/.423/.491 with a 146 wRC+ ranking despite being in his age-21 season in the International League. His home run exploits have been well discussed, as he made headlines just days before his promotion slugging a 497-foot home run in Worcester’s Polar Park

Anthony will bat fifth in his major league debut and start in right field. Batting behind him? Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer. This will be the first time the Red Sox big three are together in an MLB game since late last season with Double-A Portland.
