2025 Chicago Cubs Top 30 Prospects June Update

0

The Cubs entered 2025 with as much close to the majors talent at the top of their system as any organization. Even after debuts from Cade Horton, Matt Shaw and Moises Ballesteros, they have Owen Caissie, Jonathon Long and others waiting in the wings in Triple-A. Outside of the Top 10, the organization’s system is filled with young middle infielders and pitching depth within proximity of the majors.

The Cubs managed to acquire Kyle Tucker without impacting their depth tremendously, only losing 2024 first-round pick Cam Smith from the top of the list this offseason. Chicago entered June atop the NL Central and have plenty of ammunition to be one of the more active teams on the trade market in the coming weeks.

Risers

Moises Ballesteros, C: Ballesteros earned a big league callup at just 21 years old after a standout start to the season in Triple-A. While his defense behind the plate needs some work, Ballesteros’ plus bat-to-ball skills give evaluators confidence his offensive game will translate at the highest level.

Jonathon Long, 1B/3B: Making the right-on-right first base profile work is tricky, but Long’s bat might be good enough to carry him. Long has been one of the International League’s best hitters this season.

Cristian Hernandez, SS: After struggling with strikeouts over his first two seasons stateside, Hernandez turned a corner last year and has carried that progress into 2025 with High-A South Bend. He has improved his bat-to-ball skills by leaps and bounds over the last two seasons.

Will Sanders, RHP: Sanders was stellar over his first nine starts with Double-A Knoxville, earning a promotion to Triple-A Iowa in late May. Sanders pounds the strike zone while generating strikeouts at an above-average rate.

Fallers

James Triantos, 2B: Triantos received rave reviews on both sides of the ball last year, but 2025 has been extremely trying early on. He’s missed time over multiple weeks with lower body injuries, and has been unproductive when in the field.

Brandon Birdsell, RHP: Birdsell opened the year ranked eighth in the Cubs system, but has been sidelined since spring training with a shoulder issue.

Injuries

James Triantos, 2B: Triantos was placed on the 7-day injured list on June 1 with a leg injury. This is the second time Triantos has missed time in 2025 with a lower body injury.

Brandon Birdsell, RHP: Birdsell has yet to pitch in an affiliated game in 2025 as he recovers from a right shoulder/lat injury.

New Additions

Connor Noland, RHP: Noland looks like an up-and-down starter who can provide innings in a pinch. His variety of pitch shapes, ability to generate groundballs and above-average command has led to consistently good results.

Eli Lovich, OF: Lovich is built like a prototypical power-hitting corner outfield with the prerequisite plate skills to grow into more game power. He’s one of the more exciting young prospects in the Cubs system.
